In The Haute Seat: Doris Mayday
Name: Doris Mayday
Occupation: Pin up model and manager for Bettie Page Clothing
Birth place: Las Vegas
Hometown: Las Vegas
How long have you been modeling?
I started modeling right before I turned 18, so it’s been about four years. My first modeling gig I did for the pin up calendar Lucky Betties. I shared Miss June with my fellow blonde girlfriend Nikol, for the picture we actedlike we were both stranded when our ’53 Buick broke down.
How important is it to offer a different body type in terms of beauty standards?
I cannot even begin to explain how important it is! I’m sorry, but I was born with curves, and love my hips and ta-tas. Even though I’m only a size medium in the clothes I model, I receive tons of emails from plus-size and what I like to call “regular”-size girls who thank me for not being rail thin. And I seem to get a lot of thank you emails from the guys too!
What is the connection between pin-up modeling and classic cars?
What’s a better hood ornament than a gorgeous lady? I think the pin up girls add a nice feminine touch to the overly-testosterone-y world of hot rods.
What’s your favorite car and why?
The Tucker, for the story and passion that went behind it, and any roadster! ’29 Model A with no roof and all the money in the engine — yes please!
What’s the greatest story a fan has told you about how you influence his or her life?
Hearing that I have helped them remember how fun it is to be a woman and look the part is always refreshing. I think women nowadays give up and almost feel like wearing a dress will hold them back, but I feel that it is quiet the opposite and I love hearing others have that revelation.
What’s something you love about what you do?
I love knowing that I’m capturing an image that will be something I can cherish and share when I’m a grandma telling my grand kids stories of when I used to model.
What’s your least favorite thing?
Sometimes the negativity I hear from other women is tough to handle. Girls can just be plain out mean, like grade school bullies! A real shame, but you just got to ignore it ; not worth giving it the time of day. When you meet fellow models or fans who are supportive it makes up for it! Like when I met Genevieve, she gave me a big hug and was a total sweetheart!
