Chrome Zone: Sunset Over Viva Las Vegas

What a weekend in Las Vegas. Easter weekend calls the kool kats and kittens to sin city for the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. With concerts, burlesque shows and a car show the weekend is jam-packed with friends and fun. But, wait, there’s more.

This was my first year at VLV. We rolled in specifically for the car show and when we got into town we were invited to a couple of hot rod shops, a private party Friday night and two other car shows going on Saturday.

Whew!

I finally rolled into the Viva Las Vegas car show late in the afternoon to catch the party in full-swing. Car clubs huddled around their cars, rock-a-bettys strutting their new doos and outfits and Jerry Lee Lewis rockin’ the crowd.

We met up with our new friend Amy who is opening a retro and rock-a-billy clothing and accessory store for men and women in town – Rockin Bettie. Then we ran into Mitzi Valenzuela, famous pinup photographer and new artist on the scene BOMONSTER. You can learn more about BOMONSTER in the Art Garage here at The Queen of Cars.

Note to self: Although the other car shows were cool – Lowbrow Las Vegas and Rat City Ruckus – the place to be was VLV.

At 8pm the show ended, or did it? I hung out and watched the cool rides roll out. Not one for sitting in a lawn chair all-day, hearing the cars fire-up, watching them roll-out was worth the ticket. And at night I was treated to a bit of a flame-throw. Take a look at my video below for the antics.

Leaving Viva 2

If you were at Viva, I’d love to hear from you put your comment down and share the good times!

Tony Colombini

My Uncle Delmar made me do it. Then my two older brothers egged me on. And after we moved down to So Cal in ‘72 this 10 year old would be tested on passing vehicles on our yearly trip up the 101 and down the 5 to visit relatives in Santa Rosa. The Chevelle passes us up and as I watch the skinny tail lights disappear through the back window of the Country Squire, I’d yell out ‘68! I study the grille of the Impala following close behind and I know it’s a ‘65. Fast forward thirty years later and with a degree in Visual Communications and this artistic classic car enthusiast is living his dream creating art, design and yes even writing a word or two on the automotive industry. And with a couple of bit parts on My Classic Car, Chop Cut Rebuild and on the cutting floor of Overhaulin’. I’m very proud to share my passion for all things art and fuel with you.
