California Screamin’ 6

This month in the Art Garage we take a trip down to El Segundo, a small town just south of the busy LAX Airport. Each year Gasoline Gallery hosts the California Screamin’ Art and Hot Rod Show. This year celebrates the 6th annual show with kustom kulture artists: The Pizz, Keith Weesner, Damian Fulton, Sara Ray, 2 Sheets, James Owens, Shawn Dickinson, Krazy Dotty, Doug Dorr, Max Grundy, Big Toe, BoMonster, Grumpy, Christine Benjamin, Kent Reppert, and many more.

I rolled in just in time for a photoshoot with the Gasoline Girls Car Club (no relation to the gallery). The overcast skies gave a nice ambience to the car show outside and in the small gallery we were greeted by Mark who was busy with patrons purchasing merchandise in the store front. In the back were the artists. I met with friends, Kent Reppert, Big Toe, and BoMonster. They introduced me to Grumpy who had a really cool skull mask painting in the center of one wall. Christine Benjamin introduced herself and shared her piece; “Batty’s Midnight Ride”. Look for a feature with Christine in the Art Garage soon!

Other favorites who I plan to introduce in the Art Garage include: The Pizz, Weesner, James Owens, Shawn Dickinson, Krazy Dotty (who stippled the skateboard deck), 3 Sheets and Damian Fulton.

When you are in Southern California be sure to stop by Gasoline Gallery at 423 Main Street in El Segundo or visit them online at www.GasolineGallery.com.

My Uncle Delmar made me do it. Then my two older brothers egged me on. And after we moved down to So Cal in ‘72 this 10 year old would be tested on passing vehicles on our yearly trip up the 101 and down the 5 to visit relatives in Santa Rosa. The Chevelle passes us up and as I watch the skinny tail lights disappear through the back window of the Country Squire, I’d yell out ‘68! I study the grille of the Impala following close behind and I know it’s a ‘65. Fast forward thirty years later and with a degree in Visual Communications and this artistic classic car enthusiast is living his dream creating art, design and yes even writing a word or two on the automotive industry. And with a couple of bit parts on My Classic Car, Chop Cut Rebuild and on the cutting floor of Overhaulin’. I’m very proud to share my passion for all things art and fuel with you.
