Sultans Signal Hill Show

For the past 20 years the Sultans Car Club have been hosting their annual show on the grass at Signal Hill Park. In this, the 21st year, the show continues to be a big hit with nearly 200 classic cars, street rods, customs and trucks. On this August day, the hot weather was cooled by the ocean breeze and shade trees.

I saw my next car there. Well, actually a truck. Joe Gonzales rolled his ’39 Ford COE in from Santa Clarita. Looks like he put it on a conventional size truck chassis and had a great wood bed, exquisite paint, and nicely appointed interior.

The Sultans Car Club was started by a group of Jordan HS students in Long Beach back in 1962. They held an annual dance at the National Guard Armory where Wolfman Jack was the DJ. In the 1970’s the club became inactive and it wasn’t until 1991 when Dave Ellis, Doug Vaughn and Rich Floyd started meeting at the Lakewood Fuddruckers when the club was re-formed and now boasts nearly 100 members!

There were nothing but great rods at the show. Chopit Kustoms brought out three rides including another great truck. Members of the recently re-formed Mercifuls Car Club also were in attendance.

Johnny Rockets and the V-Twins (Sultans members) rocked the park with a great mix of 50’s and 60’s cover songs. Look for the next running of this show in August of 2012. All the proceeds of the show benefited the Signal Hill Youth Sports Program.

My Uncle Delmar made me do it. Then my two older brothers egged me on. And after we moved down to So Cal in ‘72 this 10 year old would be tested on passing vehicles on our yearly trip up the 101 and down the 5 to visit relatives in Santa Rosa. The Chevelle passes us up and as I watch the skinny tail lights disappear through the back window of the Country Squire, I’d yell out ‘68! I study the grille of the Impala following close behind and I know it’s a ‘65. Fast forward thirty years later and with a degree in Visual Communications and this artistic classic car enthusiast is living his dream creating art, design and yes even writing a word or two on the automotive industry. And with a couple of bit parts on My Classic Car, Chop Cut Rebuild and on the cutting floor of Overhaulin’. I’m very proud to share my passion for all things art and fuel with you.
