Back in those days, you did what you could. That’s how I ended up dabbling in the darkroom, developing my own film and doing my own prints, eventually. That was such a different thing from just shooting. But you end up thinking so much of about every aspect of the photography process and that’s a great lesson. But when I first started shooting digital, I felt reluctant to learn Photoshop and other programs for a long time. I poo-pooed it and I think deep inside I still feel that way.

I’d always wondered why we couldn’t make sensors for cameras take all of the information, both the light and the dark? Why are we always stuck with either one or the other? If you’re taking a picture of somebody’s face you can use a lot of tricks, you can expose for the face and use a light to pick up the back or you can use a flash to light up the people after you expose for the back. But I hate using my flash. I absolutely hate it. I’d rather set up my camera on a tripod and wait 40 seconds to record it all. I want to get a picture that represents what I’m seeing.

Taking something that is mundane, regular and plain-looking and turning it into something that is almost a work of art, to be able to ride around on something like that – I can’t find the words for it. I want girls out there to know that you can be sexy and still bust a knuckle. You don’t have to look like one of the boys to be respected and treated like one of the boys. You won’t catch me in Dickies — I like my cute outfits while I’m working on my car. Working on my car gives me a sense of control, it makes me feel really sexy to repair something and experience the results of such hard work. And there is nothing wrong with looking good when you’re doing it.

I’m not into lingerie and bikinis and garter belts. Don’t get me wrong, girls look absolutely amazing in garter belts. Even in old Playboy stuff and movies, you see that and it’s like, oh my God, that’s what a real woman should look like: curves and a garter belt. But when it comes to cars, I like to do stuff that’s realistic like dresses or the cigarette pants with a top. I don’t shoot naked girls. Not even implied. Classy, never trashy is my motto.

I learned hands-on. At first I was a babysitter at our shop, SunBelt Customs, helping here and there, but as the business grew and more customers and cars started coming in, I told my partner, “if show me how you do it and I guarantee you that I can do that.” I’d done body work with my dad, but I learned in the school-taught way to do things at the shop. That’s how I learned everything I know: being at the shop every single day.
