Back in those days, you did what you could. That’s how I ended up dabbling in the darkroom, developing my own film and doing my own prints, eventually. That was such a different thing from just shooting. But you end up thinking so much of about every aspect of the photography process and that’s a great lesson. But when I first started shooting digital, I felt reluctant to learn Photoshop and other programs for a long time. I poo-pooed it and I think deep inside I still feel that way.

I want girls out there to know that you can be sexy and still bust a knuckle. You don’t have to look like one of the boys to be respected and treated like one of the boys. You won’t catch me in Dickies — I like my cute outfits while I’m working on my car. Working on my car gives me a sense of control, it makes me feel really sexy to repair something and experience the results of such hard work. And there is nothing wrong with looking good when you’re doing it.

I’m not into lingerie and bikinis and garter belts. Don’t get me wrong, girls look absolutely amazing in garter belts. Even in old Playboy stuff and movies, you see that and it’s like, oh my God, that’s what a real woman should look like: curves and a garter belt. But when it comes to cars, I like to do stuff that’s realistic like dresses or the cigarette pants with a top. I don’t shoot naked girls. Not even implied. Classy, never trashy is my motto.

My dad’s stories got me into cars. We’d go to car shows a lot and they were all really fun and he’d tell me all the cars that we’d see, but his own stories were my favorite. He and his brothers – he has six brothers – they would get cars and trick them out and race them. There were all kinds of crazy stories of those wild days. That’s what I loved the most about the car scene. My dad was so passionate about it and that passion ignited me.

Cars require more lights, more information and creative positioning to shoot than women do. I have photographed thousands of women, but shooting cars by themselves always poses a challenge. I can never light two cars the same. Every car has its own set of curves, lines, and angles.

What’s a better hood ornament than a gorgeous lady? I think the pin up girls add a nice feminine touch to the overly-testosterone-y world of hot rods. I cannot even begin to explain how important it is to offer a different body type than the thin standard! I’m sorry, but I was born with curves, and love my hips and ta-tas.
